Modern education was only introduced to Bhutan during the reign of the First Druk Gyalpo Ugyen Wangchuck (1907–26) but until the 1950s, monastic schooling still had a near monopoly on formal education in the country. Wangdue Primary School was established in 1955 and is thus one of the oldest modern schools in the Bhutan. The school was made for the children of the armed forces. Though
