Mani dungkhor, or mani wheels, such as the one pictured, are built to accumulate merit. Prayer wheels are filled with thousands, sometimes millions, of printed mantras. It is believed that each time the prayer wheel makes one full rotation, the devotee who spun it accumulates the merit of having recited that many mantras.
