The term atsara is said to have derived from the Sanskrit word acharya for holy teacher. Atsara clowns are believed to be the represents of Mahasiddhas who after extinguishing all defilements roamed the world to subdue evils. They are the most entertaining figures at festivals in Bhutan. They entertain the crowd with their jokes, song and dances.
